Both of the beer tastings went very well. the Extreme Beer tasting was a smashing success. People were still trying to buy tickets, but the place only holds so many. It was very comfortable with only 50. The tables were moved to one side so everyone could mingle. And there was a lot of mingling going on. The beers were phenomenal. Many surprises for many of the the folks. The food never ran out and there were many full bellies by the end of the night. Pairing the food was up to the individual, and there were lots of comments as to what beer paired with which entree. Let me tell you, everyone had their own opinion. Much fun. I am planning another event for sometime in March. Not sure what the menu of beers will be, but I know I'll have to dig deep in my cellar to even come close to the last one.
The Alaskan Smoked Porter Tasting was much more subdued. We had 10 people, at one table, but, was more of an intimate crowd. The '01, '03, '05, '07, '09 were hits, however, when I brought out the '96 and '97, it brought everyone's attention to a full upright position. The meat tray matched very well with the beers. Sean Rodriguez was very informative on the brewery and of their beers. I'm looking for another matching with maybe the even years.
I received my clearance for travel next year. First of all, I'm taking my kitchen manager to Seattle to catch a Seahawk game. we leave on New Years Eve...(do I sense party time?). Second, I'm going to the Toronado Barley Wine Tasting in San Francisco. I fly to SFO on 2/11, leave for LAX on 2/15, leave for BOS on 2/18. On 2/19 there will be an Extreme Beer Festival sponsored by the BeerAdvocate group. On of those nights there will be an "Evening of Wood", which is all beers during that session will have been conditioned in wood casks. As of today, I haven't heard from the Toronado Tasting as to whether I judge or not, but I have all my tickets and reservations
The holiday season is here and everyone is out there doing theior shopping. I. like most people, haven't started. I do know what the main highlights to look for, so I just hope all the good stuff hasn't been gobbled up.
Please remember to drink responsibly. and also, we do have taxi's in town, so use them if you need to. Taxi's are a lot cheaper than a DUI. Can you say $20,000?? See you next time, and have a very, very Merry Christmas.
Later, Ken
